Windows 7 End of Life

To our customers:

Windows 7 support will end on January 14, 2020

Microsoft made a commitment to provide 10 years of product support for Windows 7 when it was released on October 22, 2009. When this 10-year period ends, Microsoft will discontinue Windows 7 support so that they can focus their investment on the support of newer technologies and great new experiences. The specific end of support day for Windows 7 will be January 14, 2020. After that, technical assistance and software updates from Windows Update that help protect your PC will no longer be available for the product. Microsoft strongly recommends that you move to Windows 10 sometime before January 2020 to avoid a situation where you need service or support that is no longer available.

What does this mean?

No technical support

No software updates

No security updates

Your Windows 7 device(s) will be at a security risk. As of January 14, 2020, your device will no longer receive security patches. And will be highly susceptible to vulnerabilities and breaches.

We recommend that the best course of action would be to acquire new machines that run Windows 10 Pro. However, if this is currently out of the planned budget, it is possible that some of your Windows 7 machines may be eligible for a free upgrade from Microsoft to the Windows 10 platform. This depends on what Windows 7 hardware you are operating with. We will be happy to advise our clients of their particular situation. Keep in mind that an upgrade to Windows 10 will also have its limitations, which we can advise you of.

We strongly recommend that any machine over 4 years of age be replaced this year. Consider budgeting an allowance for new machines. We can assist you with the pricing of new machines you may wish to purchase. We can provide our usual expertise regarding migration of profiles, and data, connecting to your server, and shared drives, and removing bloatware (things that are unnecessarily pre-installed) so that the new machines will operate at their optimal best.

What Dataserv will do to assist in device transitions:

We will be happy to go over what devices are affected and your business’s current vulnerabilities.

We have created transition processes for our clients that enable machine upgrades when feasible, or integration of roll in replacements of current older machines, using outright purchase or lease options.

We will schedule a time to perform upgrades and replacements minimizing disruption to your business,
